🧭 5 Day Trip Ideas Within 2 Hours of Denver for July Adventures

🧭 5 Day Trip Ideas Within 2 Hours of Denver for July Adventures

Whether you’ve got guests in town or just need a change of scenery without the full vacation logistics, a little day trip can go a long way. These five spots are all within about two hours of Denver, packed with summer charm, and easy to do in a day—with or without a toddler in tow 😉

Let’s get you out of town (but not too far)!

🚣‍♀️ 1. Evergreen Lake + Downtown Stroll

Distance: ~40 min
Why we love it: Evergreen is the kind of mountain town that feels like a mini escape. Rent a paddleboard or pedal boat at the lake, then grab lunch at The Bistro at Marshdale or keep it casual with sandwiches from Cactus Jack’s by the creek. There’s also a sweet little playground and walking trail perfect for kiddos.

👉 Tip: Bring a picnic blanket and hang lakeside after lunch.

🥾 2. Castlewood Canyon State Park

Distance: ~50 min
Why we love it: Tucked away in Franktown, this underrated gem has easy-to-moderate hikes, wildflowers in bloom, and sweeping canyon views. There’s even a historic homestead and ruins of an old dam that kids think are so cool.

👉 Tip: It can get hot—bring water and hit the trails early. Then reward yourself with ice cream at B-Man’s BBQ & Grillnearby.

🧀 3. Fort Collins Foodie Fun

Distance: ~1 hr 15 min
Why we love it: Fort Collins has college town energy in the best way—quirky, fun, and full of flavor. Wander Old Town, hit up The Exchange for bites and drinks, or tour one of the many breweries like Odell or New Belgium. It’s totally stroller-friendly and has lots of shade.

👉 Family win: Grab a gourmet grilled cheese at The Welsh Rabbit and let the kids splash at the Old Town splash pad.

🚂 4. Georgetown Loop Railroad

Distance: ~1 hr
Why we love it: This one's pure nostalgia. Ride the historic steam train through the mountains—it’s relaxing for adults and magical for kids. You can even add on a mine tour if you want to go full gold rush.

👉 Tip: Buy tickets in advance—they do sell out. And bring snacks! The tiny town of Georgetown has cute antique shops and candy stores to explore after.

🧘‍♀️ 5. Boulder Chill Day

Distance: ~45 min
Why we love it: Boulder is just close enough to feel easy, and just far enough to feel like a break. Stroll Pearl Street (live music, street performers, people-watching galore), pop into Boxcar Coffee, or hike the Chautauqua Trail for killer Flatirons views.

👉 Optional detour: The Boulder Farmers Market on Saturdays is worth the stop if you’re a local veggie + handmade goods lover.

☀️ Make It Yours

Whether you're chasing a quick outdoor adventure, a quiet mountain lake, or a tasty afternoon in a walkable downtown, these trips are all about low stress, high reward. You don’t have to pack much—just your sense of spontaneity and maybe some snacks.
