5 Denver Things to Do Before Fall Is Over

5 Denver Things to Do Before Fall Is Over

Fall in Denver is elite.

The weather is usually ridiculous in the best way, the mountains are showing off, patios are still hanging on, and every weekend somehow comes with twelve different things you swear you are going to do.

So instead of giving you another vague “enjoy fall in Colorado” list, here are five actual plans.

1. Do Denver Oktoberfest on Larimer

Denver Oktoberfest is back for two weekends, September 18–20 and September 25–27, on Larimer between 20th and 22nd in the Ballpark neighborhood. General admission is free, and the whole thing is exactly what you want Oktoberfest to be: stein hoisting, keg bowling, live music and enough beer to make everyone suddenly feel very German.

My move: go earlier in the day before it gets absolutely bananas, wander Larimer, stay for a stein hoisting competition and then get dinner somewhere nearby.

Best for: Friends, date night, people who enjoy a themed beverage.

2. Get Lost at Chatfield Farms

Denver Botanic Gardens Chatfield Farms is doing its eight-acre Corn Maze Fridays through Sundays from September 18 through November 1. This year’s maze celebrates Colorado’s 150th anniversary, with Colorado symbols worked into the design. There is also a mini maze for kids under 10, barrel train rides, yard games, cider, caramel apples and all the aggressively fall things you could possibly want.

And if you really want to commit, the Pumpkin Festival runs October 9–11 and includes access to the 10-acre pumpkin patch, Corn Maze and family activities.

My move: go early, bring Rory-sized patience for the corn maze, get a cider and absolutely leave with a pumpkin you did not need.

Best for: Families, fall photos and anyone who wants peak October energy.

3. See One More Show at Red Rocks

Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre in fall is a completely different experience.

The air gets colder, the sunset gets better and you suddenly remember why having one of the best music venues in the world basically in our backyard is completely absurd.

There are still great shows on the calendar this fall, including Billy Strings September 18–20, Jungle September 27–28, Shaboozey October 13 and Macklemore October 22.

My move: layers. More layers than you think. You will feel smug at 6 p.m. and deeply humbled by 10.

Best for: Date night, visitors and squeezing one last Red Rocks night out of the season.

4. Go to Glow at the Gardens

Denver Botanic Gardens does fall extremely well.

Glow at the Gardens runs October 15–18 and October 21–24 this year, with illuminated pathways, performers and hand-carved pumpkin displays throughout the gardens. It sells out, so this is one I would actually plan instead of casually remembering about it on October 23.

If you prefer your fall plans a little creepier, Ghosts in the Gardens is also happening on select dates throughout October, with storytellers sharing haunted history and staff encounters from the property.

My move: Glow with the family. Ghosts in the Gardens with adults.

Best for: A very cute fall night that requires basically zero athletic ability.

5. Have an Actual Fall Day on Larimer Square

October 10 is a surprisingly good day to block off downtown.

Larimer Square is hosting Heritage Harvest with pumpkins, fall photo ops and live bluegrass, while Little Blue Pigeon Books is holding its first Blue Book Festival with Colorado writers, bestselling authors, readings and book signings.

This is the one I like because it is not a giant production. Go downtown, grab coffee, wander the square, browse books, eat somewhere good and pretend you are the kind of person who casually spends Saturday afternoons at literary festivals.

Best for: A low-effort fall day that still feels like you did something.

And that is the list.

Not “go see the leaves.”

Not “drink a pumpkin spice latte.”

Actual plans.

Pick one. Put it on the calendar. Because fall in Colorado lasts approximately six minutes and then one morning you wake up scraping ice off your windshield wondering what happened.
