Tiny Ghosts, Big Opinions: 5 Halloween Adventures Around Denver

Tiny Ghosts, Big Opinions: 5 Halloween Adventures Around Denver

October in Colorado is a funny little month. One day you're drinking coffee on the patio in 75-degree sunshine, and the next you're digging through a closet trying to remember where you put everyone's winter coats. Meanwhile, Halloween is approaching, every pumpkin patch wants a reservation, and your kid has changed their costume plans approximately six times.

Welcome to spooky season!

With a four-year-old at home, I've become very aware that there's a sweet spot between festive Halloween fun and accidentally creating nightmares for the next three weeks. We want pumpkins, costumes, candy and maybe a little spooky magic. We do not need someone with a chainsaw jumping out from behind a hay bale. Thank you very much.

So, if you're looking for something fun to do with your kiddos (or you're just an adult who really appreciates a well-carved pumpkin), I've rounded up five Denver-area Halloween adventures worth putting on your calendar.

1. Glow at the Gardens | Denver Botanic Gardens

October 15–18 and 21–24 | 5:30–9 p.m.

If you want something that feels a little magical without going full haunted house, Glow at the Gardens is such a fun option.

Denver Botanic Gardens transforms its York Street location into an illuminated Halloween experience with hand-carved pumpkins, glowing displays, performers and winding pathways through the gardens. It's festive, beautifully done and one of those outings that actually feels special.

My advice? Book your tickets ahead of time, dress warmer than you think you need to and don't underestimate how much walking can happen when a child insists on examining every single pumpkin.

Best for: Families, a festive date night and anyone who loves Halloween without the jump scares.

2. Boo at the Zoo | Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance

October 16–18, 23–25 and 30 | 4:30–9 p.m.

Halloween costumes, candy and zoo animals? That is a pretty solid combination.

Boo at the Zoo is a nighttime trick-or-treating experience with nine candy stations, costumed characters, animal ambassadors and festive photo opportunities. You get the excitement of Halloween without committing to wandering your neighborhood for three hours negotiating how much candy is appropriate before bedtime.

There's also a sensory-friendly evening on October 31, with smaller crowds, lower-volume music and additional accommodations.

This is one I'd definitely put on the list if you've got younger kiddos who want to participate in Halloween without anything too intense.

Best for: Little ghosts, costume enthusiasts and families who want trick-or-treating with a twist.

3. Pumpkin Harvest Festival | Four Mile Historic Park

October 17–18 | 10 a.m.–4 p.m.

Now this one feels like a very classic Colorado fall day.

Four Mile Historic Park is hosting its Pumpkin Harvest Festival with pumpkins, crafts, historic demonstrations, food trucks, live entertainment and even apple cider churros. Which, frankly, might be reason enough to go.

What I love about this option is that there's more to do than simply walk through a pumpkin patch and take twelve nearly identical pictures. Kids can participate in activities, explore the historic property and see demonstrations that make the whole outing a little more interesting.

There's even an accessible pumpkin patch this year, which is a thoughtful addition.

Best for: A weekend family adventure, pumpkin lovers and anyone who believes fall snacks are an essential food group.

4. Magic of the Jack O'Lanterns | Hudson Gardens, Littleton

Select evenings through November 1

If your family loves Halloween decorations, this is your moment.

Hudson Gardens turns into an illuminated trail filled with thousands of carved pumpkins and glowing displays. We're talking dragons, dinosaurs, pirate ships and larger-than-life pumpkin creations.

And because this is Colorado, there's something particularly fun about wandering through a garden on a crisp fall evening surrounded by glowing pumpkins.

The event also features photo opportunities, seasonal treats and activities for kids.

This one would be a great choice if you're trying to find something that feels like Halloween without requiring everyone to spend three hours standing in a candy line.

Best for: Pumpkin enthusiasts, all ages and anyone who appreciates a Halloween experience with some serious artistic effort.

5. Corn Maze at Chatfield Farms | Littleton

Fridays–Sundays through November 1 | 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

No Colorado fall list would be complete without a corn maze, and Chatfield Farms knows how to do one.

This year's eight-acre maze celebrates Colorado's 150th anniversary with pathways featuring state symbols, including the Rocky Mountain columbine and bighorn sheep. There's even a smaller maze specifically for children under ten.

Which is good, because getting completely lost in a cornfield with a four-year-old who has extremely strong opinions about which direction to go sounds like a very specific kind of parenting challenge.

Go earlier in the day, wear shoes you don't mind getting dusty and give yourself plenty of time to wander. It's one of those simple fall traditions that's worth doing at least once.

Best for: Families, outdoor adventures and kids who are convinced they know the way out.

A Little Reminder Before Halloween Disappears

Here's the thing about October in Colorado: it moves ridiculously fast. Between school schedules, work, sports, family activities and the occasional surprise snowstorm, it's easy to spend the whole month saying, "We should really do something fun this weekend."

And then suddenly it's November.

So pick one. Put it on the calendar. Buy the tickets. Let the kids wear their costumes twice. Eat the apple cider churro.

Because these are the little things that make living here so great, and sometimes we need an excuse to stop doing all the things we're supposed to be doing and just enjoy them.

Happy Halloween, Denver!
