Lakewood Country Club (Lakewood, CO) - Denver-area Private Country Clubs: In Depth Guides to Golf, Amenities & Membership

Lakewood Country Club is a living timeline of American golf architecture, offering members the rare opportunity to play a course shaped by three of the most influential design minds in the game. Originally laid out in 1908 by Tom Bendelow, the course was later refined in 1916 by Donald Ross, whose influence introduced strategic bunkering, thoughtful green contours, and classic risk-reward decisions that still define the course today.

In 2017, the club undertook a sensitive restoration guided by Gil Hanse, one of the most respected modern architects and stewards of Golden Age design. Rather than modernizing for distance, Hanse focused on restoring Ross’s original intent, bringing back width, improving green complexes, and reinforcing strategic angles that reward placement and creativity. The result is a course that plays firm, fast, and thoughtful, emphasizing shot selection over power.

Lakewood remains one of only four Donald Ross–designed courses in Colorado, and its central location makes it a favorite for players who value architectural pedigree paired with accessibility. Amenities include golf practice facilities, tennis, pool, dining, and locker rooms, with membership pricing varying by category and availability.

Best For: Golf architecture enthusiasts and players who value timeless design and strategic play.
