Lakewood Country Club: Golden Age Architecture Restored for Modern Play

Lakewood Country Club: Golden Age Architecture Restored for Modern Play

Lakewood Country Club is one of the true architectural gems of Colorado golf. Founded in 1908 and originally designed by Tom Bendelow, the course was later enhanced by Donald Ross in 1916 — placing it among the rare Ross-influenced layouts in the state. In 2017, renowned architect Gil Hanse completed a comprehensive restoration, returning the course to its Golden Age character while modernizing play for today’s golfer.

Few clubs in Colorado can claim this level of architectural lineage.

Golf Course Design & Stats

The Lakewood course reflects classic Golden Age design principles — strategic bunkering, subtle green contours, and thoughtful routing that rewards precision over power.

Course Stats (Championship Tees)

18 Holes

Par 72

Approximately 7,200 yards

Course Rating: mid-74 range

Slope: low-to-mid 140s

The Hanse restoration restored original green shapes, bunker placements, and fairway strategy, creating a layout that serious golf architecture enthusiasts deeply appreciate. It is strategic, nuanced, and endlessly replayable.
